Bernard McManus residing at Beaver Meadow, Carbon County was born on July
23,1846. He is the son of Felix and Bridget (Dolan) from County Cavan, Ireland.
He attended Millersville Normal School here in Pennsylvania. as well as St.
John’s College, Fordham University. He practices law with John Lynch of this
county and was admitted to the Luzerne Bar on Nov.19, 1877. He has a brother,
the Rev. Patrick McManus, residing in Great Bend, PA.
Mr. McManus married Mary McCormick whose father, Michael came from Roscommon,
Ireland. Mr. McManus practiced law in Hazleton for 5 years prior to coming to
this community.
Although coming from humblest beginnings, having few early advantages and
required from boyhood to depend upon his own labor for his livelihood, has
considering the short time he has been practicing, pushed himself forward to a
very proud position of the bar. He is a man of magnificent physique (which is no
small consequence when one is compelled to the drudgeries of the law) of good
mind and habits of industry. He joined the profession with the understanding
that it would be of no matter of use to him without work and hard work and in
that particular possession an equipment, the want of which will account for at
least half the failures of the legal world. He is very genial, courteous man in
and out of court and enjoys a most excellent reputation as a citizen by all that
know him.
