Perhaps the most perplexing individual in this Woodruff line in particular is Benjamin Woodruff b. 1795, of Jackson Co., Ohio, the grandson of Benjamin Woodruff, who d. 1786 in Bergen Co., NJ. Benjamin Woodruff, b. 1795 married Nancy Marvin on the 15 Feb 1816 in Gallia County, Ohio. At that time, the area of Gallia County in which Nancy Marvin and her father, Picket MARVIN, were living on the Ohio River in Letart Township, present-day Meigs County, Ohio. This area is directly across the river from Jackson County, West Virginia. And, Benjamin Woodruff's father, Joshua Woodruff was living in Mason County, West Virginia, present-day Jackson County, West Virginia. The issue that I have with this Benjamin Woodruff, b. 1795 is that I have not been able to find any reference to him after he was listed in the 1838 personal property tax list of Bloomfield Twp. The last known child that he and Nancy (Marvin) Woodruff had together was Ruth Woodruff, born in 1832. Ruth was living with her mother's sister, Elizabeth (Marvin) Clark, in the 1850 census of Jackson Co., Ohio. So, it is certain that both Benjamin Woodruff and Nancy (Marvin) Woodruff were living in 1832. There are some researchers who have identified this same Benjamin Woodruff, b. 1795 as the man who married Lucy (Rupe) Holcomb (widow of Mansley Holcomb) in Gallia Co., Ohio 21 Dec 1833. It is alleged that he was an itinerant preacher and lived for many years later, having fathered children up until the year 1852 in Gallia Co., Ohio. However, I have NOT been able to find a reference to ANY Benjamin Woodruff in any records of Jackson Co., or Gallia Co., Ohio after 1838. Therefore, I have NOT yet been able to disprove or verify this hypothesis in my research. I will be posting some current thoughts on this subject in the near future and am interested in contacting others who have completed their own analysis of this particular Benjamin Woodruff problem.
